New plaster looks ready long before it is. Painting it too soon is one of the most common reasons new paint peels or discolours early. This guide covers the order that matters: dry first, then the finish you want, then the paint.

Dry first: why there's no single waiting time

Kenyan paint manufacturers' guidance is clear that new plaster must be dry, and free of loose material, before any coating. Painting over plaster that still holds moisture can cause premature peeling and discolouration.

What the guidance does not give is a single number of days. No Kenyan manufacturer publishes a waiting time for cement-sand plaster, and figures published elsewhere range from about a week to several months, often for different plaster types and climates. FinishGrid therefore doesn't publish one either.

Smooth or rough plaster?

Once the plaster is dry, look at the surface:

  • Smooth, or already skimmed: ready for a preparation coat and finish coats.
  • Rough, such as a wood-float finish: you have a choice to make about the finish.

Rough plaster: skim, or paint the texture

Skimming isn't required for paint to stick to rough plaster. Kenyan technical data includes coverage for painting unskimmed wood-float plaster directly. Skimming is about the look you want:

You want a smooth finish

  1. Skim the wall with filler
  2. Sand and prepare
  3. Paint it like smooth new plaster

The texture is acceptable

  1. Paint the plaster directly
  2. Expect to use more paint than on a smooth wall

Skimming fillers sold in Kenya include cement-based and gypsum products. They behave differently, especially around moisture, so follow the product's own guidance on drying and use. To plan filler quantities and the cost of skimming, see Wall Skimming Cost in Kenya.

Painting the new plaster

On new plaster, a typical emulsion system is a preparation coat (for many products a thinned first coat, following the manufacturer's guidance) followed by finish coats. The Paint Calculator works out the paint for smooth, skimmed or unskimmed new plaster, and Cost of Painting a New House in Kenya explains what it can cost.

Damp or cracks in new plaster

Damp patches or leaks in new plaster need their source fixed before painting, and cracks whose cause is unknown or concerning need assessing first. Skimming over active damp or cracks doesn't fix them. See Wall Preparation Before Painting in Kenya for the checks that come first.

Frequently asked questions

How long after plastering can I paint?

When the plaster is dry. There's no single safe number of days: it depends on the plaster, its thickness and the conditions. Your plasterer or painter can advise for your walls.

Do I have to skim new plaster before painting?

Only if you want a smooth finish on rough plaster. Rough plaster can be painted directly; it uses more paint.
