Exterior Smooth Coating Systems

Smooth painted outside walls, from standard exterior emulsions to silicone-based systems.

Conceptual illustration, not a photograph of a real applied finish.

The short answer

A smooth exterior finish is a paint system made for outside walls: a suitable primer or undercoat where the system calls for one, then exterior topcoats. Exterior products differ widely in how they resist weather, dirt pick-up and fading, so compare the data sheets rather than assuming every exterior paint performs the same. Preparation and any damp must be dealt with first.

What it is

Exterior paint is formulated for sun, rain and temperature change, unlike interior emulsion. Ranges run from standard exterior emulsions to premium systems, including silicone-based or silicone-modified paints, which are designed to repel liquid water while still letting the wall breathe.

How it looks

A flat to low-sheen, even colour. On wood-float plaster the texture of the plaster still shows through; on smooth plaster the finish looks cleaner and more uniform.

Where it is commonly used

  • Outside walls of houses and maisonettes
  • Boundary and perimeter walls
  • Parapets, columns and bands

Surfaces and conditions it may suit

  • Sound, clean, dry external render or plaster, whether wood-float or smooth
  • Previously painted exterior walls in sound condition
  • Very rough or roughcast walls need more paint and, for labour, a site visit (see FinishGrid's exterior guidance)

Preparation

  • Find and fix any source of damp first. Paint does not cure damp, and FinishGrid's surface method checks moisture before anything else.
  • Remove loose, flaking and chalky paint and wash off dirt and organic growth as the system specifies.
  • New plaster and repainting follow FinishGrid's exterior methodology; whether a primer or undercoat is needed depends on the surface and the system.
  • The product's technical data sheet is the authority on preparation, primers, number of coats, coverage and drying between coats.

Application complexity

Experienced painter Straightforward to apply, but height, access, weather and preparation make exterior work a job for an experienced team. Avoid painting in rain or on wet walls.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Expect dust and red-soil splash on lower walls; a darker plinth colour or band helps.
  • Periodic gentle washing extends the look; check the data sheet for how the finish may be cleaned.
  • Deep and saturated colours can show fading sooner in full sun, depending on the product.

Limitations and drawbacks

  • No paint stops water getting into a wall from a leak, rising damp or a failed gutter.
  • Performance differs a lot between products; a lower price per litre can mean a different product class, not a bargain.

Common misconceptions

“All exterior paints last about the same.”
Products differ in weather, dirt and fade resistance. Compare data sheets and the system, not just the price.
“Silicone paint can be put on any wall to stop damp.”
It is designed to shed rain from a sound wall; it doesn't fix damp coming from inside the wall, the ground or a leak.
“Interior emulsion is fine outside if you add more coats.”
Interior emulsion is not made for exterior exposure; use an exterior product.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Is any part of the wall damp, cracked or peeling, and why?
  • Which exact product and system (primer or undercoat and topcoats) does the quotation specify?
  • How exposed is each wall to sun, wind-driven rain and splash?
  • Does the quote include scaffolding, preparation and repairs?

When a professional assessment may help

Helpful when walls show damp, cracks, peeling or chalking, when you are comparing very different exterior specifications, or for multi-storey houses where access and exposure change the plan.

Plan the next step

Check what the wall needs first, check that a quotation specifies the right system, or ask for advice on your project.
