Finish Guide
Gloss & Enamel Finishes
Hard, high-sheen paints for doors, woodwork, gates and metalwork.
The short answer
Gloss and enamel paints are hard, high-sheen finishes made for doors, timber trims, gates, grilles and other metalwork, not for ordinary walls. They need a sound, compatible base (often a primer and an undercoat the system specifies) and careful preparation, because their shine shows every flaw.
What it is
A family of hard-drying paints with a high (gloss) or medium (satin or eggshell) sheen. Both solvent-based and water-based versions exist; they behave differently and are not always compatible with each other.
How it looks
A shiny, reflective surface that makes colours look deeper and richer. The gloss level picks out every brush mark, dent and bump.
Where it is commonly used
- Doors and door frames
- Timber trims and skirting
- Gates, grilles, burglar-proofing and railings
- Fascia boards
Surfaces and conditions it may suit
- Prepared timber
- Prepared metal (with the primer the system specifies)
- Previously glossed surfaces that are sound and suitably sanded
Preparation
- Bare timber and bare metal need the primer the system specifies; rust must be dealt with on metal.
- Existing gloss is usually sanded to give the new coat something to grip, and checked for compatibility.
- The product's technical data sheet is the authority on preparation, primers, number of coats, coverage and drying between coats.
Application complexity
Experienced painter Brushing a smooth, run-free gloss finish takes skill; dust and insects settling on wet paint are common problems.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Hard-wearing and easy to wipe.
- Chips and scratches show; touch-ups may be visible in the sheen.
Limitations and drawbacks
- Not for ordinary interior walls: on walls it shows every flaw and is a different system from wall emulsion.
- Some solvent-based enamels yellow over time, especially out of direct light, depending on the product.
Common misconceptions
- “Gloss is just a shinier silk.”
- Gloss enamel is a different product for different surfaces; it is not interchangeable with Vinyl Silk wall emulsion.
- “Gloss can go straight onto bare metal.”
- Bare metal needs the primer the system specifies; without it, rust and poor adhesion follow.
Questions to ask before choosing
- Is the product solvent-based or water-based, and is it compatible with what is there now?
- Which primer and undercoat does the system require?
- How will rust on gates and grilles be treated first?
